Hurricanes excel in sport and in the classroom

June 29, 2018

CHARLOTTETOWN – In addition to a strong year of competition, 2017-18 was another banner year in the classroom for the Holland Hurricanes.

Fifty-six Hurricanes student-athletes who participated in Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) competition this season were nominated for the CCAA National Scholar-Athlete Award, matching the school’s total from the 2016-17 season.

Meanwhile, an additional 47 student-athletes who participated in football, hockey, dance, and cheerleading were recognized with Hurricanes Scholar awards.

“Our athletics program strives to attract student-athletes who can balance academics with the demands of their sport,” said Albert Roche, Holland College’s director of athletics and recreation. “We are extremely proud of their academic achievements and their commitment to success in the classroom and in competition.

“These student-athletes significantly enhance our reputation as a school that values academic excellence in our program.”

To qualify as a CCAA National Scholar-Athlete or a Hurricanes Scholar, a student-athlete must be in full-time studies for the entire academic year, achieving an average of 80 per cent or higher.

For the fourth consecutive year, Holland College has also received the CCAA Academic All-Canadian Recognition Award, leading the nation with 12 Academic All-Canadians, who combined their academic excellence with a selection on their respective All-Conference teams.

The Hurricanes also recognize the male and female student-athlete with the highest average in CCAA sports with awards of distinction.

Ponoka, Alta.’s Daria Leidenius is Holland College’s top female student-athlete, as the ACAA champion in women’s golf posted a 94.7 per cent average while studying Golf Club Management at Holland College.

Meanwhile, David Cozens is the top male student-athlete, as the second-year Accounting Technology student from Cornwall, P.E.I. earned a 99 per cent average while competing for the Hurricanes badminton team.

Finally, the men’s football Hurricanes are once again the Hurricanes Academic Team of the Year, leading the way with 21 Hurricane Scholars, up from the 17 they posted last season.
